Are you scared to start a YouTube channel? Have you been pondering for years about whether or not to start one? Are you afraid of putting yourself in front of the camera?

2022 is almost ending, are you going to write down on your New Year’s Resolutions that you’re going to start a YouTube channel next year? Before you get your pen out to write you’re resolutions, I’m going to tell you 5 reasons why you should start a YouTube channel in 2023.

  1. Presentation Skills

Sitting in front of a camera is daunting enough, and now you have to speak to it? You may want to pass, but talking in front of a camera is practicing your speaking skills. Yes, you are talking to a camera and not an audience of people. But trust me, talking when the rolling, is a bit scary at first.

Are you presenting the information in a clear and concise way? So that the audience will know what you are saying? Are you speaking in a muffled voice, and your message is not conveyed correctly?

And even if you’re not doing talking head videos, you are still presenting yourself. Are you confident in what you say or show? Do you have the expertise in what you are doing? Maybe you need to research more so that your video will be the best of them all.

YouTube definitely helped my speaking skills improve because a) I had to speak clearly, articulating every word and making sure what I had said, the listener will understand. At the end of the day, someone, your audience, will be watching your videos. And if you don’t put your best foot forward, people are going to click out of your video. Now, of course, there could be many reasons why someone would click off your video, but how you present yourself could be a big one.

If you are a shy person, never raised your hand in class before, I think maybe this is a good exercise. I was and still am that shy person, I personally continued to make videos to step out of the box and put myself out there. I think it improved my speaking skills.

2. Video editing skills

Video editing is huge, as it has been these past few years. Your favorite social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, every one of them has an aspect of video editing. When you are working, having video editing skills may help. That you have a new set of skills.

Video is part of your life, from Youtube videos about how to ace your math test to the entertaining Minecraft videos that you kept watching when you were young.

Why not jump on the bandwagon and master video editing? Whether it’s on your phone, tablet, or laptop, there are many video editing software out there for you to choose from.

3. Get out of your comfort zone!

It may be daunting, to put yourself out there to the world, but doing this will get you out of your comfort zone, for sure.

You do not have to film for 3 hours to get a 10-minute video at the end. You can just flip your camera on, and talk about something you like. Do some quick edits, here and there. Do not make it perfect. Upload it as soon as you are done editing. You don’t want to give yourself time to overthink it.

Pro tip: if you know how to do something, share that expertise with the world.

People would love to hear it. It could be as simple as how to style your hair or how to build a Lego set or any how-to video. Even if you have seen it so many times on YouTube, do it again with your own twist.

Here’s the thing, if you created a vlog or something to that effect, you might be a bit self-conscious. Because the viewers are looking at you, and they even know you, and what positive impact you had on their lives.

But if you are doing a how-to video, your attention will be focused on the task at hand. You won’t be worrying if your hair is perfect or anything else. And the viewers wouldn’t be too. They also will be focused on the subject at hand.

4. Shorts

If you are someone who is waiting for the perfect time to start a YouTube channel, this is the time. Shorts, if you didn’t know, is shorter vertical videos that are under 1 minute. You should take advantage of this because YouTube is rolling paid ads on Shorts and you’ll be part of this if you reach a certain threshold. If you start today, and build up your recognition, by the time YouTube starts paying people who reached that threshold, you may be one of them to get it.

Not only that, but if you like to make long-form content, but like making reels and short TikTok videos, then I suggest you hop onto Shorts. It’s the beauty of both worlds. To make long-form and short-form videos together on the same platform!

5. Knowledge of social media

A lot of companies are hopping on the bandwagon of social media. You may have seen brands where the message is there, but it’s a little rusty and needs some fixing up if they want to attract their target audience whoever it may be. Knowing the ins and outs of YouTube, and social media platforms, in general, will help you become more in tune with them.
